Alessia Cara Says She “Never Really Found a Place to Fit In” as a Kid
DISNEY/Mark AshmanAlessia Cara’s current single, “Scars to Your Beautiful,” is all about feeling comfortable in your own skin. But the singer tells J-14 magazine that doing that wasn’t always easy for her.
“Growing up, I never really found a place to fit in,” she tells the mag. “I’ve always been self-conscious about my personality.”
She describes herself as being “really awkward” and says she “didn’t have many friends” as a kid, but she’s since realized that being different is an asset.
“You don’t always have to be popular and do things everyone else is doing,” she explains.
Now, at the ripe old age of 20, she’s confident enough to go makeup-free on red carpets and sing about being outsider.
And her best advice for anyone who’s feeling insecure? Alessia says, “Realize that everyone that you think is perfect feels like they’re not good enough, too.”
She adds, “We all just need to love ourselves and believe in ourselves.”
