DNCE and Hailee Steinfeld Go “Behind the Lyrics” on Tuesday’s “The Tonight Show”
Joe Jonas of DNCE; ABC/ Lou RoccoOn Tuesday’s The Tonight Show, it was time once again for Jimmy Falllon to get three popular music artists to go “Behind the Lyrics” for the true meaning behind their biggest hits.
The latest installment featured DNCE and Hailee Steinfeld in a taped segment that revealed the supposedly true stories behind their songs.
Here’s what we learned:
Belive it or not, DNCE’s party hit, “Cake by the Ocean” is actually pretty dark. The band’s Joe Jonas broke it down: “Cake, frosting, icing, ice, iceberg, ocean, it’s about the Titanic.” That prompted keyboard and bassist Cole Whittle to ask, “Is that the boat with Leonardo DiCaprio?”
The inspiration for one of Steinfeld’s hits came out of a destructive relationship. “There’s a line in ‘Starving’ that goes, ‘The more I know you, the more I want to.’ I was really struggling to stay away from a relationship that wasn’t so great for me,” she confessed. “It was with The Cheesecake Factory. Have you seen the menus? They’re like phone books. How do you say no to that?”
Country star Chris Stapleton was also featured in the segment.
