Ed Sheeran Gives First Performance in a Year; Jokes About Cheek-Cutting Incident

Jason Merritt/Getty Images via ABCAfter a year-long hiatus from performing, Ed Sheeran returned to the stage in London last night to perform for Princess Kate’s charity. People reports that in between songs, he joked about the recent incident cheek-cutting involving another royal — Prince Beatrice.

“This is the first time I’ve done a show in a year, so please bear with me,” he told guests at the gala for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, also known as EACH.

He added, “It’s nice to be back. I’ve had a whole year off. I went to Japan for about a month and hung out with Japanese people. Got my face cut open, anyone read about that?”

Ed reportedly needed stitches after Princess Beatrice accidentally cut his face with a sword during a mock-knighting ceremony. And indeed, he sported what appeared to be a scar on his right cheek.

The singer, who’s an ambassador for EACH, was performing at the gala to help raise money to build a new center in Norfolk, England for children with life-threatening illnesses.
