Halsey Explains Meaning Behind Jacket She Wore for Nobel Peace Prize Concert
Photo by Nigel Waldron/ Getty ImagesWhen Halsey performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway yesterday, she was sporting a leather motorcycle jacket with the number “20:1” painted on the back. Turns out, the jacket was more than just a fashion statement.
The singer explained its meaning to fans on Instagram. “The number on this jacket represents the ratio of male-to-female recipients of the Nobel Prize, an award that recognizes great achievements in social, creative and scientific fields,” she wrote. “An award that this year finds itself belonging to not a single woman.”
She added, “I am honored to stand on this stage as a voice, and I know the Nobel institution compassionately shares my hope that more women will walk the Nobel stage. So, following my performance I will be making a sizable donation to foundations that encourage female education.”
Halsey performed her song “Castle” at the concert, which fit her female-empowerment theme. The lyrics say, “I’m headed straight for the castle/They’ve got the kingdom locked up/And there’s an old man sitting on the throne that’s saying I should probably keep my pretty mouth shut.”
