Harry Styles plays Mick Jagger, debuts new song on “Saturday Night Live”
Will Heath/NBCEver since One Direction arrived on the scene, people have remarked how much Harry Styles looks like a young Mick Jagger. He got the chance to make that a reality this past weekend, when he actually portrayed a young Mick Jagger in a skit on Saturday Night Live.
In addition to being the musical guest on the show, Harry Styles also appeared in a couple of sketches. One, Celebrity Family Feud Time Travel Edition, pitted celebrities from today against celebrities from the year 1977. Harry played a 1977-era Mick Jagger, complete with the Rolling Stones frontman’s accent and herky-jerky dance moves.
In one exchange, Kenan Thompson, as host Steve Harvey, tells Harry-as-Jagger that he loves the Stones and he also loves his later work, when he went solo. That happened in 1985.
“Solo? Why would anyone in a successful band go solo? That is insane!” Harry-as-1977-era-Mick says. It was a knowing wink to the fact that all the members of One Direction are currently doing just that.
Harry also appeared in a sketch about Union soldiers in the Civil War who try to boost morale by singing a song called “Old New York.” One soldier, played by Jimmy Fallon, attempts to turn into a current-day pop song called “Party at My Parents’ House,” and Harry, playing a captured Rebel soldier, chimes in on the bridge.
Harry also sang two songs: his current hit “Sign of the Times,” and another song from his upcoming solo album, “Ever Since New York.” Fans have speculated that that song is about Harry’s ex Taylor Swift simply from the title, but the lyrics don’t seem to be particularly specific.
