Justin Timberlake Says He Wanted to Do “Trolls” for His Goddaughters, Too

Miller Mobley for The Hollywood ReporterJustin Timberlake has said in a number of interviews that one reason he agreed to star in and do the music for Trolls is because of his two-year-old son, Silas. But in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, JT says he also had two special little girls in mind when he said “yes.”

“I have a son who’s almost 2. But my best friend has two daughters, so I have two goddaughters. And I think I was afraid to go into Trolls because I was like, ‘Well, there’s probably going to be more frivolity to it than substance,'” he tells the Hollywood Reporter as part of a songwriters’ roundtable with John Legend, Alicia Keys, Sting and others.

“But then I looked at the story and I’m like, ‘Wait, hold on, we have a female protagonist that has a belly [and] crazy hair’ — and thinking about my two goddaughters and what women must go through from such a young age of being ashamed of their body and their appearance,” he continues. “For young females to get to see that, I was like, ‘Whoa, that’s not frivolous at all.’ That’s so important.'”

JT adds, “And what a cool way into getting them into the theater — ‘I wanna be like Princess Poppy, not Barbie.'”

In the same interview, Justin denies claims by the directors of Trolls that when Justin said he’d write “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” for the movie, he declared that it was going to be a hit.

“That is not true!” JT insists. When Alicia and John tease Justin about it, he states, “That is the director trying to make the story sound like it was f*****’ worth something more than it was. Pardon my French.”
