Lukas Graham Singer’s Ready to Help Host “Christmas for the Christmas-less”

Danny ClinchChristmas is this Sunday, and Lukas Forchhammer, frontman for the band Lukas Graham, says he’s happy to be going home to Denmark, where he can help people who have nowhere else to go on Christmas Eve.

Lukas grew up in Christiania, an area of Copenhagen that’s similar to a hippie commune.  He tells ABC Radio, “We serve 1,500 homeless people every Christmas Eve. I used to help out with my father since I was 15, I still do it now: it’s called ‘Christmas for the Christmas-less.'”

And the event’s not just for needy people; it’s also for those who can’t be home for Christmas.

“You…have CEOs in Armani suits having dinner next to homeless families, because they’re in Copenhagen over Christmas away from their families,” Lukas explains. “It’s not about how much money you have, it’s ‘Do you have a place to celebrate Christmas?’ And we have presents for all the kids, we have vegan options.  Where we’re from, we might be poorer than the rest of the country, but we’re richer, in some sense.”

Lukas himself has a lot to celebrate: the band just received three Grammy nominations, and he and his girlfriend welcomed their first child, Viola, in September.  Spoiling the baby isn’t on the agenda, though.

“I don’t think I’m the spoiling type yet…she’s only gonna be three months on Christmas Eve,” Lukas laughs. “She won’t even know she’s getting presents.”

Lukas will spend the holiday with his girlfriend’s family and with his mom, who he says is “pretty stoked” about those Grammy nods.  As for what he thinks it’ll be like for the band to attend the Grammy ceremony in February, Lukas  is fixated on the Grammy dress code.

He laughs, “We’re gonna be wearing tuxedos for the first time ever!”
