“Moana” Stays Afloat to Lead the Box Office for the Third Straight Week

Walt Disney Studios(NEW YORK) — Disney’s Moana continued its reign in the box office top spot for the third weekend in a row with an estimated $18.8 million haul, bringing its domestic total to $145 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

Internationally, the animated film — featuring the voices of Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson — earned an estimated $23.5 million, bringing its overseas take to $93.8 million for a global total of $238.8 million. Disney is the parent company of ABC News.

Coming in second was the ensemble comedy Office Christmas Party, starring Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, T.J. Miller, Kate McKinnon and Courtney B. Vance, earning an estimated $17.5 million. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, starring Eddie Redmayne, Collin Farrell and Katherine Waterston, holds down the third spot an estimated $10.78 million, bringing its domestic gross $199.3 million. Internationally, the film brought in an estimated $33.1 million, bringing its worldwide total to over $680 million.

The sci-fi thriller Arrival, starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, placed fourth with an estimated $5.6 million this weekend, followed at number five by Disney and Marvel’s Doctor Strange, with an estimated $4.6 million.

A pair of potential Oscar contenders also had strong showings. The Casey Affleck-led Manchester by the Sea earned $3.15 million, and La La Land, the retro musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, delivered an estimated $855,000 in limited release.  That $171,000 per-theater average is a record take for a five-theater release.  The film will add another 14 theaters next weekend, and expand into 250-300 screens over the Christmas holiday.
