Rihanna named Harvard University’s Humanitarian of the Year

Christopher Polk/Getty Images for NARASRihanna is Harvard-bound — not to study, but to pick up the University’s Peter J. Gomes Humanitarian Award at a ceremony next Tuesday.

S. Allen Counter, the Harvard Foundation’s director, tells the Harvard Gazette, “Rihanna has charitably built a state-of-the-art center for oncology and nuclear medicine to diagnose and treat breast cancer at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown, Barbados.”

Counter also notes of the singer, “She has also created the Clara and Lionel Foundation Scholarship Program [named for her grandmother and grandfather] for students attending college in the U.S. from Caribbean countries, and supports the Global Partnership for Education and Global Citizen Project, a multiyear campaign that will provide children with access to education in over 60 developing countries, giving priority to girls and those affected by lack of access to education in the world today.”

The Harvard Foundation recognizes prominent public-spirited leaders each year in honor of the late Rev. Professor Peter J. Gomes. Past honorees include actor James Earl Jones and the late tennis star and activist, Arthur Ashe.

Oscar-bound John Legend recalls "incredible" experience at 2015 Academy Awards

Array ( [post_title] => Oscar-bound John Legend recalls "incredible" experience at 2015 Academy Awards [post_content] =>

Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagicJohn Legend is headed to the Academy Awards Sunday night: not only does he appear in the night's most nominated film, La La Land, but he's also performing the movie's two Oscar-nominated songs during the telecast.  Sure, it's exciting, but this is sort of a "been there, done that" kind of thing for John: he performed on the show two years ago, and went home with an Oscar to boot.

In 2015, John and rapper Common performed their nominated song "Glory," from the movie Selma, on the Oscars telecast, and ended up winning the Best Original Song trophy.  The two performed a song in front of a recreation of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led his famous march.

At the podium, John said "Glory" wasn't just a song about the civil rights era. "The struggle for justice is right now...there are more black men under correctional control today than were under slavery in 1850," he said. "When people are marching with our song, we want to tell you, ‘We are with you. We see you. We love you. And march on.'”

Looking back at that moment, John told ABC Radio, "It was incredible. We saw the whole crowd just get caught up in that moment and people were brought to tears. And we know it wasn't just because of us performing: it was the whole moment and what the moment represented."

He added, "For us to see that and feel that as we were performing, I've never felt anything like it on stage before."

By the way, while John is one of La La Land's executive producers, he won't actually win an Oscar if it wins Best Picture. Academy guidelines make him ineligible to share in the award.

Eight-time Oscar winner predicts a song with "integrity" from a "hit" film will win on Sunday night

Array ( [post_title] => Eight-time Oscar winner predicts a song with "integrity" from a "hit" film will win on Sunday night [post_content] =>

Frank Trapper/Corbis via Getty ImagesLa La Land is expected to sweep Sunday night's Academy Awards, but does that count the Best Original Song category?  Justin Timberlake's Trolls hit "Can't Stop the Feeling!" is nominated, as is "How Far I'll Go," from Disney's Moana, and a song by Sting.  But with two songs from La La Land in that category, does any other song even have a shot?  Well, yes, actually.

"Of course it has a shot," says eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, who co-wrote the songs for Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and many other films.  Why? Because, Menken says, the two La La Land songs "may end up splitting the vote."

In general, when it comes to Best Original Song, Menken says the Academy wants "a clear sign that a song is specifically written for a moment in a film.  That it's not just somebody taking a song out of a trunk...they look for integrity."

By that standard, both Justin's song and the Moana tune, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, qualify: they were written for characters in their respective films to sing at the right moment.  Then again, so were the La La Land songs.

"They also look at the outer package as well," Menken tells ABC Radio. "If the movie itself is a hit, that really helps the song to be recognized."

But, he adds, "There's a lot of intangibles. There's certainly a lot of internal politics that happen...you don't want to know what goes into the sausage!"

If Miranda loses, he'll still have a job writing Disney songs.  Menken tells ABC Radio that he and Lin are teaming up to write new material for a forthcoming live-action version of The Little Mermaid.  Menken won an Oscar for co-writing "Under the Sea" for the original.
