“SNL”-Bound Alessia Cara Says Success of “Scars” Is “Definitely” Surprising
Disney/Mark AshmanShe first broke out in 2016 thanks to her debut single “Here,” which topped Billboard’s Pop Songs chart. Now, Alessia Cara has matched that success with her self-empowerment anthem “Scars to Your Beautiful,” which has also reached #1 on the Pop Songs chart. Alessia says she’s glad that this particular song is finding such a big audience.
“You know what? I am, I definitely am,” Alessia told ABC Radio when asked if she’s surprised by the success of the song. “Of course, with all my songs, you never really know what to expect, so I just kinda put it out blindly and hope for the best.” She adds, “But I’m just really happy that this song, of all the songs, is doing well.”
Alessia is now the the first artist to score two Pop Songs #1s from a debut album since 2014, when Iggy Azalea did it.
“This message is something that I really wanted to get out to everybody,” she says of “Scars,” which is about embracing and loving yourself for who you are. “And I hope that people take something from it. So I’m glad it’s reaching as many people as possible.”
Alessia will bring the message to an even bigger audience on February 4, when she makes her debut as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live.
