“It was very nerve-wracking,” she laughs. “But having Pete beside me was really nice, his calming presence made me feel a little bit better.”
While Julia isn’t nominated for a Billboard award herself, a couple of the artists for whom she’s written hits, are. In addition, she says she’s rooting for Twenty One Pilots, who have 17 nominations, as well as for Sia.
Billboard Music Awards are based on actual chart performance of songs, rather than fan votes or music industry votes. Julia notes, “It makes you see just how well certain songs have done in the marketplace, which is kinda cool.”
Julia is no stranger to seeing her songs do well in the marketplace: she’s co-written hits for Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Fifth Harmony, Nick Jonas and more. But she says it’s a huge thrill to see her debut single as an artist in her own right, “Issues,” climbing those same charts.
“It’s surreal,” she tells ABC Radio. “I always get super-excited any time I see any of my songs climb, but for it to be mine…my words and my voice…it’s just so overwhelming, in the most awesome way possible!”
